The Candy Rant Can

We’re fast approaching the all Hallows Eve and we all know what that means: candy. I’m not ashamed to admit that I would still be trick or treating to this day if it were socially acceptable. I miss coming home with a pillow case full of candy, spreading it all over the floor, and giving all the candy I didn’t want to my little sister. You would think some of the awful candy that has existed for years would have made its way out of the rotation by now.

Necco Wafers, for example. I despise Necco Wafers. Wow, I’d love some candy, but I also want to chew on a piece of chalk. They’re the worst! I suppose they’re great if you love the taste of multi-colored nothing. I would likely them to eating Tums antacids, but I actually enjoy those to an extent. I used to work at a grocery store in high school and every year we would set up for Halloween and every year we would box up all the Necco Wafers and ship them right back to the 9th circle of hell, which is where I’m assuming the Necco corporation headquarters are located. I doubt any have been made since the 1920’s. They simply recycle the same batch year after year, but nobody notices.

I remember vividly, what my candy surplus would look like 2-3 days after Halloween. I would spread it all out looking for one last Twix Bar, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, or Charleston Chew only to find a seemingly never ending quantity of Necco Wafers, Bit-o-Honey’s, and those stupid strawberry hard candies that carry no brand name.

What were you favorite and least favorite Halloween Candies?

Uh... actually Jon, Necco wafers are from Boston! But I have to say, they're my least favorite Halloween candy too!

Reese’s Cups. Horrible excuse for peanut butter. Now, I probably stand alone in my animosity for chocolate and peanut butter combinations, but it is just awful. And why does it always melt so quickly?? I’ll be honest, I’ve given that small nugget a whirl… every once in awhile I’ll be so desperate for chocolate that I’ll convince myself that I can somehow eat only the chocolate exterior without getting the nasty faux-peanut butter. Failure every time. Never my proudest moment when I gag and spit the whole thing out in protest. As Jon would say… I’m such a ‘lady’. Bottom line… Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups stink!

Oooohhhhh you're so lucky to actually celebrate Halloween and have an excuse to collect and eat candy! No such luck here in Australia. I even have to ship over those delectable peanut Butter Cups which rock!! mmmmm

I still get to go trick-or-treating, and now that my 7 year old is much bigger, he can fill up quite the pillow case with candy! We pretty much raid his pillowcase after we get back from trick or treating.

The best... Reese's, Tootsie Rolls, Milky Way's, Smarties and Snicker's. I used to like those 100,000 bars - don't know if they still make them.

I despise Almond Joy and whatever that other coconut one is.... Mounds.

Yes, coco is definitely wrong...Reese's Cups rule! But, Snickers were always my favorite.
Candy corn was a close second, though. Least favorite was Smarties. An absolute waste of time, IMO.

Hey Jon,
My husband found this on Boston.com this morning and I thought of you... warning, it's crude humor and contains strong language... but it's hilarious for Red Sox fans. Enjoy...

Hey Jon, do you know the restaurant Cuchi Cuchi in the Cambridge Central Square area? The Necco factory used to be right across the street. It has since moved to Revere.

My favorite Halloween candies were always reeses peanut butter cups!

i actually like those strawberry candies, lol. they have a strange gooey center.

worst is DEFINITELY good and plentys. they are not good at all, and that's why they're so freaking plenty.

favorite is probably krackels or kit kats. or when some people forgot it was halloween somehow and would give me a couple bucks instead. seriously.
